Whenever he strikes the first note or chord on the acoustic guitar, Angelo Pizarro hopes it creates a “nice tone” for his audiences to enjoy. And once he starts playing, his passion for what he calls “a mixture of what I like” — an improvisational blend of traditional Filipino–Spanish music with jazz and pop — is made very clear after he performs for several hours without taking any breaks.

After reading the thoughts of the students who attended [Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation’s Summer Youth Leadership Program], I am wondering what in the world they were taught there.
Dieter Cui: Pioneer in Music
“I want to spend more time teaching, have more performances or concerts in Asian countries, and prepare more songs to enrich my program,” Cui said. “[I want to] introduce more sounds, not only to the Chinese community [but] to all Asian people.”

What is this issue about?
Each year, we run this special issue to celebrate the community leaders of tomorrow. All of the editorial content in this issue consists of essays written by teens from Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation’s annual Summer Youth Leadership Program (SYLP), a three-week program that teaches diversity, leadership skills, and community building.
Deems Tsutakawa: Pioneer in Music
Born and raised in Seattle, Deems Tsutakawa draws upon life experience for his music. Although Tsutakawa’s grandparents are from Japan, he describes his life experience as “an American experience.”
Warren Chang and Buyun Zhao: Asian American Pioneers in Music
Husband and wife duo, Warren Chan and Buyun Zhao have introduced the traditional Chinese genre of music to the Seattle community over the last two decades. They founded the first organization dedicated to Chinese music in Washington state.
July 16: NWAW Foundation and Boeing give out scholarships
Ten students received $2,000 scholarships from the Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation’s Summer Youth Leadership Program (SYLP). This is the first time the Foundation partnered up with the Boeing Company.
