On a warm Thursday night, Aug. 28, a dimly light Toi club was abuzz with unexpected conversations. Amid the happy hour well drinks, unlikely people from all walks of life gathered in celebration of the party’s occasion, the one-year debut of Earthwalkers Magazine.

As expected of the wired Generation X-er I am, I Googled “Serve the People” to find out more about the book and the author. I was a little surprised; what I thought was a cleverly coined book title was actually a political slogan stemming from a speech Mao Zedong delivered on Sept. 8, 1944, in memory of a fellow Communist party member.

Western Union helps Laotians retain culture
The Western Union Company, known for its money transfer services, is supporting programs that help immigrants adapt to their new American life as well as preserve and honor their ethnic heritage. Western Union has announced its sponsorship of the Lao Highland Association’s (LHA) Mien language program at a kickoff event that was held at LHA’s office in Seattle. The program, designed for Laotian Americans, is an opportunity to learn or improve Mien language skills and gain a greater knowledge of Lao’s rich cultural heritage. It is open to all who are interested.
Novel deals with suicide, abuse, and the legacy of being Japanese American
Working within the emotionally associative forms of poetry and memoir, award-winning poet David Mura has already created a body of work that tackles head-on complex issues such as sexual desire and addiction, race relations and the unspoken consequences of U.S. WWII internment camps on later generations of Japanese Americans.
$3 million restaurant has big dreams
Last Thursday, Duc Tran and nine other investors made a bold move — opening a $3 million Asian restaurant. It is one of the biggest if not the largest in King County.
Women Empowered
Thanks to trailblazers across the globe, women today are continuing to succeed in spite of hardships. Their success comes through hard work and dedication ó but what is also important is the balance between taking care of oneís self and taking care of others. This is the theme of the next Women of Color Empowered event, to be held at China Harbor Restaurant in Seattle on Friday, Sept. 26, at 11:30 a.m. This is an event honoring women who are accomplished in their fields, who have contributed to local communities of color in both traditional and nontraditional jobs.
