Benes Aldana was awarded the Emerging Filipino Leaders (EFL) award in the law category by the Filipino Community of Seattle at its inaugural EFL Awards held at the Filipino Community Center. Aldana is a founding member of the Filipino Lawyers of Washington (FLOW).

Sept. 28: Tuan Nguyen selected for Census Bureau’s Asian Advisory Committee
Tuan Nguyen, who is vice president for Media and Film Company, a Vietnamese-language entertainment production company, was selected by Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke to serve on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Advisory Committee on the Asian population.
Oct. 2: Rep. Zack Hudgins to represent U.S. in India
State Rep. Zack Hudgins (D-Tukwila) and a select group of six young political and policy leaders from around the United States were chosen by the American Council for Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) to participate in a 10-day political exchange program beginning on Oct. 30.
Two fashion shows, two approaches
Oct. 1: The Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) presented a fashion show, consisting of 27 models, as part of their annual fundraising dinner. The event was called “A World of Cultures” and was held at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel. The show raised $95,000. ♦
Sept: 20: Korean BBQ cook-off presents plenty of good eats
The Korean BBQ Cook-Off Competition was held at Luther Burbank Park. It was hosted by the Korean America Coalition of Washington (KAC-WA), Korean American Bar Association (KABA), and Korean America Health Professional Association (KAHPA). More than 110 people attended.
Sept. 16: Health Global Connect Inc. has its open house with ACRS
Health Global Connect Inc. is a startup company bringing new health technologies to cancer patients. At its open house on Beacon Hill, it partnered with the Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) to launch a beta site in a joint symposium with the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center. Health Global Connect Inc.’s co-founders are Teresa Hau and Lyon Wong.

Sept. 17: Lori Matsukawa is AWC Communicator of the Year
KING 5 co-anchor Lori Matsukawa was named 2009 Communicator of the Year by the Seattle professional chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC). Matsukawa will receive the award on Oct. 17 at the Chapter Awards Breakfast at AWC’s National Conference at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel.
Sept. 14: King County recognizes 2009 Live Well Challenge winners
The King County council honored the top two teams — the Snap Pea Dragons and Mick & Team Spirit UP — in the county’s fourth annual Live Well Challenge. The winners rose above the competition by holding hula-hoop competitions, recipe swaps, and lunch time walks. The challenge is a team-based event designed to help King County employees form healthy habits through diet and exercise. This year, 95 teams and 540 people participated.
