February: Deems releases new album
Jazz group Deems released its new album, “On Irving Street.” Helmed by pianist and producer Deems Tsutakawa, the album also consists of musicians Paul Richardson, Merwin Kato, Dan Benson, Paul Anderson, David Yamasaki, Tim Horiuchi (a co-producer), Gordon Uchima, and Steve Ryals.
Feb. 12: Acclaimed cookbook author Andrea Nguyen demonstrates dumpling-making at a Monsoon East luncheon
To celebrate her newest cookbook, “Asian Dumplings: Mastering Gyozas, Spring Rolls, Samosas, and More,” Andrea Nguyen gave a dumpling-making lesson to 70 guests at a Lunar New Year luncheon at Monsoon East in Bellevue. Tea pairings for the meal was provided by Jason Chen.
Jan. 26: Municipal League of King County announces 2010 civic awardees
The Municipal League of King County will commemorate its 100th year by hosting its Centennial Celebration Dinner on March 18. At the event, this year’s civic award winners will receive their awards.
Dec. 6: 2010 NAAAP Seattle elects board of directors
On Dec. 6, the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) Seattle Chapter held their elections at the Tea Palace in Renton.
Feb. 6–7: Great turnout at Sponge’s Lantern Festival Celebration
Sponge hosted its Lantern Festival Celebration at its Issaquah and Seattle locations where families were able to make paper lanterns and sample dumplings. About 100 people turned up at each location.
Feb. 7: Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America rings in the new year with Setsubun
Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America hosted Setsubun-sai to celebrate the beginning of spring. The festival took place in Granite Falls, Wash.
February: UW Provost Phyllis Wise in book, “Women of Color and Social Justice”
University of Washington Provost and Executive Vice President Phyllis Wise wrote the foreword in a book entitled, “Women of Color and Social Justice: Taking their Rightful Place,” edited by Richard Greggory Johnson III and G.L.A. Harris.
Jan. 16: Secretary Shinseki receives JAVA award
General Eric K. Shinseki, U.S. Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, received the Courage, Honor, and Patriotism Award from the Japanese American Veterans Association (JAVA) in recognition of his 44 years of distinguished leadership in the United States Army and in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
January: New officers at VABAW
The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington (VABAW) announced its new 2010 officers. They are President Lam Nguyen-Bull, President-elect Ty Ho, Secretary Martin Le, and Treasurer Sinjin Dinh.
