City University of Seattle held its inaugural Global Innovations Gala and Awards at the Four Seasons in Seattle. The event raised $25,000, and about 200 people were in attendance. Martha Choe, chief administrative officer of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was the keynote speaker.
Oct. 9: Luly Yang’s annual couture show helps Camp Korey
The show was held at the Fairmount Olympic Hotel in the Spanish Ballroom. The show benefitted Camp Korey in Carnation, Wash. Five children from the Seattle area who each attended Camp Korey wore an outfit on the runway designed by Luly. The show raised $50,000.
Aug. 1: Christine Chen and Richard Velazquez marry
The two met salsa dancing at Century Ballroom on Capitol Hill. Guests at the wedding were the couple’s friends and family from San Francisco and New York. The couple’s golden retriever was the ring bearer during the ceremony.
Nov. 14: Young author Seth Campos holds book signing
Seth Campos, who is only 14 years old, signed copies of his comic strip compilation book, “Welcome to Beeky Airlines,” at the 2009 Northwest Holiday Arts Gift Show. Campos’ book is a humorous work that promotes literacy in a fun way.
Nov. 10: Seattle Chinese Garden raises $115,000
A crowd gathered at the Imperial Garden Seafood Restaurant to raise $115,000 for the next stage of construction on the Seattle Chinese Garden’s (SCGS) Knowing the Spring Courtyard. Honorary co-chairs and hosts of the event were Christine and Omar Lee, owners of the Great Wall Mall in Renton. They donated meals to 230 guests.
Oct. 1: NAAAP members celebrate with Silk Road Gala
The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) had its 2009 Silk Road Gala with more than 250 guests in attendance, at the Ontario Science Centre. This is the Silk Road Gala’s inaugural year, and it helped to raise more than $1,000, which will be distributed to the Sunnybrook Foundation and the Carefirst For Seniors Foundation.
Oct. 29: Kristin Tan is named Davis Law Group Scholar Athlete of the Week
Kristin Tan of Holy Names Academy was awarded a $100 scholarship and recognized as a Davis Law Group Scholar Athlete of the Week for her 3.89 cumulative GPA and her outstanding performance as a competitive golfer.
Nov. 3: Legacy House gets $2,000 grant
Members of Qwest’s Pacific American Asian Network (PAAN) presented Legacy House with a $2,000 grant to purchase computers for use by the seniors it serves.
Oct. 29: Suresh Kumar headed to post in Obama administration
President Obama nominated Suresh Kumar as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director General of the United States and Foreign Commercial Service, Department of Commerce.
Northwest Asian Weekly people win awards in writing and design
This year, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) awarded former Northwest Asian Weekly (NWAW) Editor Eleanor Lee for her excellent writing in Northwest Asian Weekly’s editorial section. Lee placed third in the opinion category and received her award on May 30 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.
