Doctors awarded for bettering the community

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced two Puget Sound area nonprofits, five community leaders and five local high school students as recipients of the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative (NEI) Neighborhood Builder award. The winners were given their awards Oct. 30 at a ceremony at McCaw Hall for their ongoing efforts in bettering the Puget Sound community.

Renton principal receives the ‘Oscars of teaching’

Cascade Elementary principal Shannon Harvey was awarded the prestigious 2008 Milken National Educational Award for her outstanding work as an educator. The award comes with a prize of $25,000. Teacher magazine calls the Milken the “Oscars of Teaching.”

Superstar Pianist Lang Lang signs pianos for relief fund

With more than 2 billion people watching his performance at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, pianist Lang Lang became a star. He drew attention at Sherman Clay Pianos in Seattle on Oct. 15. He signed eight pianos as part of a fundraiser for Chinese earthquake victims.

Successful campaign for McKenna

The Greater Seattle Chinese community celebrated Attorney General Rob McKenna’s re-election campaign Oct. 28 at a dinner at Imperial Garden Restaurant. Organized by one of McKenna’s longtime friends, Bellevue City councilmember Conrad Lee, more than 60 community leaders attended the event to put the final touches on McKenna’s successful campaign.

Filipinos commemorate their American history

On Oct. 18, the Seattle University Filipino Alumni Chapter came together for its second annual fall reunion in celebration of Filipino American history month. All SU alumni of Filipino descent were invited back to campus to attend a special mass featuring SU alumnus Deacon Fred Cordova, class of ’52, who gave a special homily on the history of Filipino Americans at Seattle University and in Seattle. The mass was followed by a reunion reception where more than 60 people attended the event.

Bridging the Gap a success

The 14th annual MAP Bridging the Gap Breakfast was held Saturday, Oct. 18 at the HUB Ballroom on the UW campus. More than $70,000 was raised for the Multicultural Alumni Partnership (MAP) Endowed Scholarship Fund, which helps economically disadvantaged UW students from diverse backgrounds continue their education.

Rainier Beach Family Center renewed

ARAMARK employee volunteers refurbished the Rainier Beach Family Center on Oct. 16, a program of Atlantic Street Center, one of Seattle’s premier nonprofit organizations. The center’s much-needed programs and services support more than 3,000 multiethnic, low-income families in the central and southeast neighborhoods per year.
