The Foundation for International Understanding through Students (FUITS), music educator Kent Stevenson, music director Fred West, and the University Christian Church organized a Haiti benefit concert that included more than 100 performers. In addition to the performers, about 175 community members attended the concert at University Christian Church, raising more than $5,000.

On Jan. 12, a 7.0 magnitude struck Haiti. The earthquake’s epicenter was 16 miles west of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, causing massive devastation. Seventy percent of the city’s buildings were destroyed. On Jan. 25, Haitian authorities stated that the death toll has exceeded 150,000 people, and as many as 1 million Haitians are homeless. To put this in perspective, the 2008 Sichuan earthquake caused nearly 70,000 deaths.
Haiti aid is a telling test of China-Taiwan relations
BEIJING (AP) — One of the world’s trickiest relationships is being tested in devastated Haiti, where China and Taiwan are rushing aid to one of Taipei’s few remaining diplomatic allies. Taiwan even announced that its president would personally deliver earthquake aid later this month.
