Comings & goings
The American Legacy Foundation recently appointed Dr. Benjamin Chu as the chairman of their board of directors. Dr. Chu is one of the three medical doctors and the only Chinese American to receive the chair title. “I am honored to take on the leadership of the foundation’s board, allowing me to continue to help educate the American public that tobacco is the number-one preventable cause of death in our country,” Chu said.
Life lessons through food
As expected of the wired Generation X-er I am, I Googled “Serve the People” to find out more about the book and the author. I was a little surprised; what I thought was a cleverly coined book title was actually a political slogan stemming from a speech Mao Zedong delivered on Sept. 8, 1944, in memory of a fellow Communist party member.

The 1960s were a formative time for a second generation Chinese American like Shawn Wong. As an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley, he joined the nation in trying to grasp the evolving notion of identity.
