On July 28, Kin On’s second annual sports tournament turned out to be a success. It raised approximately $30,000 dollars. The sports tournament included billiards, table tennis, badminton, basketball, and soccer. Profits will go toward Kin On’s mission to provide culturally and linguistically relevant health and long-term care services. Their mission is to provide health and long-term nursing care in the appropriate language and cultural setting for the Asian elderly community. ♦
June 8: Taky Kimura, 85, graduates from high school
Taky Kimura was taken to a Japanese internment camp the day before his high school graduation 67 years ago.
June 26: Cindy Ryu re-elected to the Association of Washington Cities
During the Association of Washington Cities’ annual conference, Cindy Ryu was re-elected to the Western At-Large position one.
June 26: Tastes of Asia benefit dinner a success
Nearly 200 people attended the Executive Development Institute’s benefit dinner and auction at SoDo Park in Seattle. Profits will fund culture-tailored leadership camps. The dinner comprised of Korean, Japanese, Thai, and Filipino foods.
July 6: Paul Watanabe to serve on Census Bureau committee
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke has appointed Paul Watanabe to be part of the Asian Advisory Committee for the 2010 Census.
July 14: Chef Michael Ty announced as the new ACF president
Michael Ty from Las Vegas is the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) new national president. He was elected by his peers. Ty was born to Chinese parents in Manila, Philippines.
July 23: Nicole Mau wins culinary competition.
A student at South Seattle Community College, Nicole Mau is the grand winner of the national Pears Competition. Her creations, using the red anjou pear, beat competitors from Texas Culinary Academy and Florida Culinary Institution.
June 30: William E. Franklin is a rising sun
The Consulate General of Japan at Seattle held a conferment ceremony for William E. Franklin, who was decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.
June 18: YouthCare prom a resounding success
More than 100 homeless and low-income youth involved in YouthCare programs enjoyed an evening of rare extravagance — the prom. YouthCare’s Executive Director Dr. Melinda A. Giovengo says this dance would not have happened without the help of caring people in the Seattle community. The venue, food, tuxes, dresses, limo, and DJ services were all donated by local businesses and individuals.♦
June 4: Hoan Do’s book launch party
Hoan Do spoke at the University of Washington campus in Kane Hall during the launch party of his debut book, “How to Succeed in the Real World: What School Won’t Teach You.”
