Jyot Singh, a 27-year-old community organizer and small-business owner, has been elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, becoming the first Sikh American and first Indian American to serve in the state’s legislature.
Singh won Georgia House District 97 with 68% of the vote, and is scheduled to take office when the Georgia General Assembly convenes in January 2027. Singh campaigned on improving public education, addressing rising living costs, expanding Medicaid and protecting civil rights. At 27, he is also expected to be among the youngest members of the state legislature.
“My faith taught me the values of selfless service and to fight for the wellbeing of all, so that means my work in the General Assembly will put people over politics,” Singh said in a statement following his victory.
He said he intends to focus on making Georgia more affordable and expanding access to healthcare and other services for working families.
Singh is a graduate of Gwinnett County Public Schools and Yale University. He has spent more than a decade organizing in Georgia and played a role in political organizing surrounding the 2020 elections, according to his campaign. He later established a consulting business.
