A 46-year-old Cambodian man being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) died Jan. 9 after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, authorities said.
Parady La was arrested on Jan. 6 and was being held at the facility while receiving treatment for severe drug withdrawal. The following day, officers found him unresponsive and immediately started CPR, gave him several doses of Narcan and called for medical assistance, ICE said.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors later said he had very limited brain function and diagnosed him with an anoxic brain injury following cardiac arrest, along with shock and multiple organ failure. La remained on life support until Jan. 9.
ICE said La came to the United States as a refugee in 1981 and became a lawful permanent resident a year later, but later lost that status after a long criminal history that included convictions for robbery, forgery, receiving stolen property, DUI and drug possession.
