Seafood City Supermarket, a Filipino market from California, on Thursday celebrates the grand opening of its first supermarket in Washington state. The Westfield Southcenter store joins other Asian ethnic groups — Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans — in the region’s competitive grocery business. In the south end alone, you have Ranch 99 in Kent, Uwajimaya and Viet Wah in Renton, and Paldo World and H Mart in Federal Way. Thers also a new Chinese restaurant coming to Factoria.
Restaurants are no longer the new business model in the Asian community. Mom-and-pops are out of trend. Big chain grocery stores are in. ♦
