Congratulations to the Indian community for installing the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Oct. 17 at the Bellevue Library. The idea of the statue and its location couldn’t be more perfect, as the Indian community has grown immensely since Microsoft started hiring many software engineers from India. Installing it at a library is also appropriate because it symbolizes a high ground for information, ideas, and ideals.

Oct. 6: Three Americans win the Nobel in physics
Americans Charles Kao, William Boyle, and George Smith won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics. Kao’s discoveries led to the creation of modern fiber-optic communication networks. Boyle and Smith were honored for inventing the eye of the digital camera.

Oct. 5: API women come together to learn leadership
More than 200 women of Asian and Asian Pacific heritage attended the National Leadership Summit to network and advance leadership skills on the weekend of Sept. 26–27. The Summit was hosted by The Center for Asian Pacific American Women and took place at Microsoft’s Conference Center.
