Michigan House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri has made history as the first Indian American elected Speaker of the Michigan House and the first Sikh American elected to lead a state House of Representatives in U.S. history.
Puri said his parents immigrated to the United States from India, arriving with just $40 in their pockets, and a suitcase.
“To stand here today … a testament to their sacrifices, the power of our community, and the limitless promise of Michigan,” said the Speaker-elect. “When my wife, Nidhi, and I look at our four young children, we are reminded of why representation matters—not just so our kids can see what’s possible, but so every community knows they have a seat at the table.”
