A magnitude 7 earthquake has hit China-governed Tibet at 10:33 p.m. China Standard Time (GMT+8) on Thursday, according to several outlets. The quake’s epicenter was in Nagqu, a high-altitude, sparsely populated county in northern Tibet, about 400 miles from the capital, Lhasa.
Though the U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at a shallow depth of a little more than 6 miles, between 126 and 400 people are thought to have died in a magnitude 7.0-7.1 earthquake in Tingri county, a rural Tibetan county, in January 2025.
Several outlets reported that authorities have found at least two injured people in a village near the quake’s epicenter. Some houses are showing signs of damage, and some have reportedly collapsed.
