Indian authorities are working to evacuate tens of thousands of people from coastal areas in the eastern part of Andhra Pradesh state, before Cyclone Arnab makes landfall.
India’s Meteorological Department said that the cyclone is expected to bring with it gusting winds and heavy rain. The state’s disaster management authority said that the cyclone’s outer bands have already begun to bring rain to parts of the coastline, and may make landfall earlier than expected, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
An official told the AP that the cyclone may reach the coast between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Indian Standard Time on Wednesday morning, and that the cyclone is moving at 12 mph.
The state’s coastal districts are on high alert. Authorities have focused on evacuating people from flood-prone and low-lying areas in the cyclone’s path, and have canceled some train services. So far, authorities have evacuated at least 89,000 people, but more than 12 million people live along the cyclone’s predicted path.
