Tsukasa Hirota has assumed duties as Japan’s consul general in Seattle, beginning his first diplomatic assignment in the Pacific Northwest, according to the Japanese Consulate General in Seattle’s Facebook page.
Hirota joined Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shortly after the end of the Cold War, citing major international events at the time as an inspiration for pursuing a career in diplomacy.
In his new role, Hirota said he plans to build on longstanding ties between Japan and the Pacific Northwest in areas including business, culture and education. He also pointed to the region’s growth as a global center of innovation as an opportunity for expanded cooperation between Japan and the United States.
“As Consul General, I am committed to building upon the strong relationships that have been established over the years while fostering new forms of cooperation suited to the challenges and opportunities of our time. I will also dedicate myself to supporting the safety and well-being of Japanese nationals residing in our jurisdiction and to assisting the activities of Japanese companies operating in the region.”
