The Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (OLEO) recently issued seven recommendations to the King County Sheriff’s Office aimed at clarifying its role in federal immigration enforcement.
The recommendations call for clearer policies, more community outreach and better information about how local deputies respond as federal immigration enforcement increases across the county.
OLEO developed the recommendations with six community organizations, including the Congolese Integration Network, Eastside For All and The Arc of King County. The groups gathered feedback through an online survey and listening sessions.
Community groups said increased immigration enforcement has made some immigrants and refugees hesitant to contact law enforcement or other public agencies for help.
The recommendations are intended to strengthen the Sheriff’s Office’s existing policies and make them easier for the public to understand.
