
Shayan Oveis Gharan
Shayan Oveis Gharan, a University of Washington (UW) professor of computer science and engineering, has been awarded the International Mathematics Union’s 2026 Abacus Medal—a major prize awarded every four years to a computer scientist under 40—“for his landmark contributions to the theory of algorithms.”
Gharan, who’s Iranian, received his Ph.D. from the Management Science and Engineering department at Stanford University in 2013. Before joining UW he spent one and a half years as a postdoctoral Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley.
