The Bellevue City Council on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to name a new downtown park Isan Park, recognizing the city’s Japanese American heritage and the community’s longstanding contributions to Bellevue.
The park, located at Main Street and 112th Avenue Southeast, sits on property transferred to the city by Sound Transit in September 2024. The proposed name, “Isan,” means “legacy” or “heritage” in Japanese.
The name emerged from a public engagement process that drew 258 suggestions from community members. After reviewing the submissions under the city’s park naming policy, the Parks & Community Services Board recommended “Isan” for its uniqueness and its connection to Bellevue’s Japanese American community. The City Council unanimously supported the recommendation.
Final approval is expected at a future meeting.
