The world’s first Chinese-language queer museum opened on Friday, May 29, in San Francisco’s Chinatown, just in time for Pride Month.
The OUT Museum creates a permanent space dedicated to preserving and sharing the histories, cultures and experiences of LGBTQ people in Chinese-speaking communities.
Organizers said the museum was established in response to the longstanding neglect of LGBTQ histories in the Chinese-speaking world, where many works, documents and personal artifacts have been scattered, overlooked or lost.
The museum website states, “The existence of OUT Museum reminds us that even on the margins, Chinese queer people always maintain resilience and a spirit of resistance.”
