The Senate has confirmed former U.S. Rep. Michelle Steel as ambassador to South Korea— filling a diplomatic post that has been vacant since early 2025.
Steel, a Republican who represented a Southern California district for two terms, was confirmed Wednesday by a 55-39 vote. President Donald Trump nominated her for the post in April. Steel is expected to assume her post in the coming weeks.
Born in Seoul, Steel would become the second Korean American to serve as U.S. ambassador to South Korea, following former Ambassador Sung Kim.
During her Senate confirmation hearing last month, Steel pledged to support U.S. businesses operating in South Korea and emphasized the importance of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
