A California lawmaker has introduced legislation to establish an annual statewide observance honoring martial arts icon Bruce Lee.
Assembly Bill 2455, introduced by Democratic Assemblymember Matt Haney of San Francisco, would designate May 17 as “Bruce Lee Day” in California. The bill would require the governor to issue an annual proclamation and encourage schools and community organizations to recognize Lee’s life and achievements.
Supporters say the proposal highlights Lee’s cultural influence and his ties to California. Lee was born in San Francisco and went on to become a global film star and martial arts pioneer whose work helped expand Asian American representation in entertainment.
May 17 marks the day Lee returned to San Francisco as a young adult, a moment supporters describe as significant in shaping his path and international impact.
