President Obama nominated Diane Gujarati, 47, to serve on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York on Sept. 13.
“I am confident she will serve the American people with distinction,” said Obama.
Gujarati is currently the deputy chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York. She has been an assistant U.S. attorney for 17 years, and worked on a range of criminal prosecutions and appellate matters, including economic, violent, narcotics, trafficking, and exploitation crimes.
If confirmed, Gujarati will be the first Indian American to serve as an Article III federal judge in New York.
