On July 8, the American Bar Association (ABA) announced it would award its inaugural International Human Rights Award to prominent lawyer Wang Yu.
Wang was jailed a year ago when Chinese authorities cracked down hundreds of lawyers and human rights advocates. She is still in jail awaiting trial on charges of anti-state activity and will not be present to receive her award on Aug. 6.
The ABA chose Wang because of her dedication to human rights, civil rights and civil liberties in China; she has also worked on justice for women and girls.
