Timothy Wu
Even with a loss, Timothy Wu has already made history.
The New York Times (NYT) endorsed him with a prominent headline, “Timothy Wu for Lieutenant Governor.”
Rarely have I seen the NYT endorse an Asian American with a big headline on the editorial page. The Seattle Times has done it often, but the NYT, considered one of the most influential media in the nation, is supporting an Asian American, and not the one the governor has endorsed. Columbia University law professor Wu would have been the first Asian American elected to statewide office in New York if he won the lieutenant governorship. Wu lost the election with 40 percent of the vote. For his first time in a state-wide race, he did well. This will not be the last for Wu, it will just be the beginning for an unconventional politician. (end)
