Northwest Asian Weekly was the recipient of three 2013 Better Newspaper Awards at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s 126th annual convention held Oct. 4 in Olympia.
Reporter Jason Cruz won first place in the Best News Story–Long category for his story, “Family asks for help to free Tacoma resident imprisoned in Nicaragua,” about prison conditions in Latin America. Judges called it “an engaging read.”
The first-place award for Best News Story–Short went to Will Livesley-O’Neill for his story, “Yesler Terrace redevelopment worries some in Little Saigon.” Citing the development’s impact on a small community, judges deemed Livesley-O’Neill’s story “worthwhile reporting.”
Han Bui and Stacy Nguyen brought home a second-place award for the Best Website. Judges were impressed with the site’s featured story box on the home page, easy navigation, and overall look, which they called “welcoming.” (end)
