Two young Mercer Island residents placed at the 2013 Junior U.S. Open of Judo, which took place July 26 – 29 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Taylan Yuasa, a junior at Mercer Island High School and member of Budokan Judo Club in Seattle, took second place in the Juvenile below 50 kilogram division, and third place in the IJF Junior below 55 kilogram division.
Taylan had a 32–1 record this past season in the Pacific Northwest Judo Tournament series for ages 15 to 16. He also took first place at the Washington State Championships and Middle–High School State Championships.
Tegan Yuasa, a 5th grader at West Mercer Elementary School, took first place in the Intermediate 2 Division ages 10–11 28 kilogram weight class and third place in the Golden Score Tournament below 34 kilogram division.
The Junior U.S. Open Championships drew over 650 competitors from over 20 countries. (end)
