Judge Mary I. Yu received the Public Official of the Year Award from the Municipal League at their 2013 Civic Awards on Thursday, April 11.
Yu received the award for her public service, leadership, and nonprofit work. She serves on the board of Farestart, an organization that provides meals for disadvantaged men, women, and families. She also co-chairs the boards of the Washington State Bar Association and UW Leadership Institute. In addition, she is a co-chair of the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission.
Yu was appointed judge by Governor Locke in April 2000. Prior to her appointment, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff to King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng and Director of the Peace and Social Justice Office for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Yu earned a B.A. in Theology from Dominican University in River Forest, Ill., an M.A. in Religious Studies from Mundelein of Loyola University in Chicago, and her J.D. from the University of Notre Dame.
