For the last few weeks, our newsroom turned catwalk housed the many creative entries that came pouring in for our newspaper fashion contest. Just when we’re sure that one entry could not be topped, another came in with comparable creativity and visual appeal. Who knew that old newspapers could lead to such great works of art? We had readers young and old submitting their entries for this contest, and many entries were featured at the Chinatown Seafair parade. Our judges included former NWAW editor Stacy Nguyen, Anthony Massey, Janet Pritchard of Republic Services, and Jim Doane. Our sponsors included Republic Services, Clear Channel Outdoor, Jim Doane, and Shiao-Yen Wu.
The first place winning design was a dress designed by Devon Yan-Berrong. The dress was inspired by a Chinese qipao and included a Japanese Geisha wig hat. Berrong used delicate origami layering techniques to contruct his modern design. Berrong’s friends, Alex Thomas, Yuriko Lomein, Victor Loo, and Kaesri Keopanya, David Collett, helped Berrong assemble an artful photoshoot.
