More than 70 high school and middle school students in Washington, and one from across the country in Maryland, submitted essays, videos, and even a comic strip for the first annual competition sponsored by the student-run Washington Association for Chinese Education (WACE).

Winner of the Grand prize, announced Jan. 28 at an awards ceremony at the Seattle Chinese Garden, is Mason Ji, a senior at Interlake High School in Bellevue. He got $500. Second place prizes of $250 went to Katarina Nguyen, a senior at Edmonds-Woodway High School, and Megan Lu, a sixth-grader at Heather Wood Middle School. Third place honorable mention prizes of $100, went to Kate Lipscomb, a sixth-grader at Madrona K–8, Lee Xie, a junior at Issaquah’s Skyline High School, and Andy Lin a senior at Skyline.
WACE was founded by Andrea Liu and Kevin Li, seniors at Skyline. (end)
