“Are you a relative of [murder suspect] Dr. Louis Chen?” a reporter asked me at the King County Superior Court as soon as I sat down.
“No,” I said. Just because I have an Asian face doesn’t mean we are related. I was the only Asian in the room last Monday morning for Chen’s arraignment.
A few minutes later, another journalist asked the same question.
There were lots of reporters and attorneys in court, but no sign of Chen’s relatives or friends.
If they had been there, they wouldn’t have wanted to squeeze together with the other defendants waiting for their turn in the court room.
The big surprise that day was not Chen, who looked petite and frail in his jail suit, but the first defendant yelling out the word “Bitch!” at the judge. Of course, all his requests were denied. ♦
