The news of Gary Locke being nominated to be the ambassador to China was released Monday afternoon. Locke’s own siblings learned of it minutes before it was released by ABC TV News.
When Locke called his sister Marian Monwai, of Bellevue, and revealed that he was moving again, her first thought was that he’s moving back to Washington state.
Instead, Locke said, “I am going to China.”
“I was shocked,” said Monwai. “[But] it’s an honor [for him].”
How did ABC scoop other news sources?
ABC has been running a series of fun stories called, “Made in America,” about how American households should change their habits and buy American products instead of Chinese products.
More jobs would be created that way. Sometimes, it is even cheaper to buy American goods, according to ABC.
My guess is that the Obama administration noticed and decided to reward ABC with the scoop.
As U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Locke has been instrumental in increasing America’s exports to the rest of the world. I would not be surprised to learn that Locke and his staff members came up with the “Made in America” idea and approached ABC about it. ♦
