“In Their Boots” shares the stories of military families touched by war

July 29, 2010 By Northwest Asian Weekly

Mikey and Hota Ferschke are featured in an upcoming episode of "In Their Boots," a documentary series about America's service members. The Ferschkes lost a husband and father, who was killed in Iraq while Hota was pregnant with Mikey. Hota faces deportation from the United States because she isn't a citizen.

“In Their Boots,” a 10-part documentary series about Americans who have been touched by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has premiered in Seattle and Tacoma on KCTS 9, with a new episode set to air each Friday through August.

“In Their Boots” focuses on new struggles that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have presented to troops and their families.

“Second Battle,” an upcoming episode, tells the tale of two wives of U.S. service members who face removal and deportation from the United States, despite their husbands’ service. When U.S. Marine Michael Ferschke Jr. was killed in Iraq, his wife, Hota, was pregnant with their son, Mikey. Now, Hota, a Japanese citizen, cannot stay in the country.

The second couple featured is Jack Barrios and his wife Frances. Jack planned to legalize his wife’s immigration status when he returned from the battlefield, but the couple discovered that a deportation order had already been issued for Frances, setting in motion an uphill legal battle.

“Second Battle” aims to tell the story of the countless soldiers who return from war only to face a second battle at home —  a battle against this nation’s inflexible immigration laws.

“Second Battle” is set to air on Aug. 13 at 12:30 a.m. on KCTS 9 HD Seattle/Yakima and KYVE 47 Yakima. ♦
