To the Editor:
I just read the article “Using Art to End Violence” by April Nishimura in the NWAW [in the Feb. 27-March 5 issue] and was glad to see it. I must agree with Ignacio’s comments about two different identities being complicated.
It’s quite clear from your article that homosexual, transgender, and other identities are not as mapped or targeted in domestic abuse campaigns.
What was not clear was how the arts were engaging these topics.
More details on the KIA performance and the QTAP project would have assisted the title of the article.
Testimonials or excerpts from these and other projects that lead to reduced violence would have bolstered your main idea. Visuals are also an important (although limited) resource in print.
I’m grateful to see that you are addressing these issues and was surprised and pleased to see [Nishimura’s name] behind it.
