On July 28, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated a $41 million grant to Concern Worldwide US. Concern Worldwide US is an organization that works to find solutions for the high rate of deaths of newborn babies and mothers throughout the world.
The investigation will start in Malawi, India, and Sierra Leone. These three places suffer alarming rates of death during pregnancy, childbirth, and among newborns.
In Sierra Leone, more than 25 percent of children die before the age of five. One out of 18 mothers die during pregnancy or delivery. Approximately 66 percent of mothers in India lack vital health resources.
Though there are proven solutions for these problems, the Concern Worldwide US team is concerned with the delivery of these solutions. Many times, these solutions do not reach the patients because of inefficient health systems. The Concern Worldwide team will use the Gates grant to find more effective ways to increase intervention coverage. ♦
