Two Seattle-based teams won the United States Tennis Association (USTA) League National Championships held in Tucson, Ariz. at the men’s 4.0 and women’s 3.0 Levels. The USTA leagues feature more than 2,000 amateur teams competing in seven levels in hopes of reaching the top. Seattle did just that.
Each match consisted of two singles matches and three doubles matches, which required eight starters. The teams had to win three individual matches and win the team match. All individual matches were two sets, with the third set being a 10-point tiebreaker.
Both teams were coached by local tennis pro Chinese American Roger Mark.
Chinese American Bob Chung captained the men’s team. Korean American Diane Vecchio and Chinese National Yao Chen captained the women’s team. The women’s team featured players of Chinese, Indian and Filipino extraction.
