SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — What started as a dispute over what to name a retail district in San Jose may end up getting a city councilwoman removed from office.
The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters has certified the signatures gathered to try to recall Councilwoman Madison Nguyen.
Nguyen — San Jose’s first-ever Vietnamese council member — enraged some of the city’s Vietnamese American residents over support of the name “Saigon Business District” instead of “Little Saigon” for an area of Vietnamese-owned stores and restaurants.
Assistant City Clerk Dennis Hawkins says the City Council is scheduled to certify the petition on Oct. 21.
After a formal vote in November, the recall would be placed on the March 3 ballot. ♦
