Welcome to the special 13th edition of my pop culture column! After one year of covering Asian Americans in pop culture, I have witnessed a lot of ups and downs. It is on that note that I present my list of top celebrities and figures that reflected how far Asians have come in pop culture and the bottom five that were flat out embarrassing.
This month: Victoria’s Secret unveils first Asian angel
This November included some highs and lows for Asian American performers, some breakups, a World Series performance, a film with a mostly Asian cast, an angel, and my favorite, a sexiest man title! Let’s get the bad news over with!
Blog: Our risk paid off, McGinn and Constantine in the ID together
The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward and thrill, I say. That was our motto at the Northwest Asian Weekly with our Diversity at the Top dinner on Dec. 4. We tied our fate with the election on Nov. 3 by honoring its winners. Little did we know that the result of the Seattle mayoral election would be unknown until Nov. 10.

The day before the Diversity at the Top dinner, a group of Republicans held a fundraising event at the China Harbor Restaurant for Attorney General Rob McKenna, a hopeful candidate for the 2012 Washington state gubernatorial race.

In this sequel to “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,” Kyon and the rest of the brigade (whose name stands for Save the World by Overloading it with Fun Haruhi Suzumiya) members go along with Haruhi as she takes on the task of making a movie for their school’s cultural festival.

On Dec. 2, Seattle Mayor-elect Mike McGinn held a town hall meeting at the Langston Hugh Theater. Facilitated by former State Rep. Kip Tokuda, attendees were supposed to give McGinn input on how to make Seattle a better city.

I was reading the Sunday New York Times and one article stated that there were too many people who wanted to volunteer serving Thanksgiving dinner for the poor. Too many volunteers in the wrong places!

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on those who you have taken for granted. I will make it up to those people.
