Kitsap Tours started its three-hour Bainbridge Island tour earlier this year, in part, to showcase the new Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial.
A ferry ride from Seattle, the tour starts at the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal, where guests are greeted as they get off the ferry. The tour explores the history and heritage of the island, while traveling the back roads, enjoying the scenery, and learning about the island and its residents through narration and a short video presentation.
The final stop of the tour is the new Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, where a guided tour of the memorial is offered.
The memorial is a reminder to “Let it not happen again,” referring to the forced removal of people of Japanese descent to internment camps for the duration of World War II. Bainbridge Island residents were the first to be removed, two-thirds of them were American citizens. (end)
