BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) — A journalist in Kyrgyzstan died after police beat him, said relatives and colleagues.
The death of government critic Almaz Tashiyev reinforced concerns about the risks faced by independent journalists in the Central Asian nation.
It came after a series of attacks on reporters and shortly before next week’s presidential election.
Tashiyev died of complications from head injuries after undergoing surgery.
His funeral was held on Monday, July 13.
Relatives said he had been beaten by eight police officers the previous week.
Advocates said conditions for the media have deteriorated under President Kurmanbek
Bakiyev, who is seeking re-election July 23.
Critics said the government has tried to stifle opposition ahead of the election. ♦
