State Rep. Bob Hasegawa was the keynote speaker for the 64th annual Nisei Veterans Committee (NVC) Memorial Day service. The event was held on May 25 at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle.

Hasegawa serves on the national executive board of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) as well as the alliance’s Seattle Chapter Executive Board.

A labor and social justice activist, Hasegawa was a member for the Teamsters Union — the largest labor union in the nation — for 32 years when he was elected leader of the largest Teamers trucking workers union in the region. He also led the Teamsters pro-union democracy reform movement.

Hasegawa graduated from Antioch University with a concentration in Labor Relations and Organizational Change. He also graduated from Shoreline Community College with an Associate Degree in Labor Studies.

More than 300 members of the Japanese American community gathered at the service. World War II veterans from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service were also in attendance. ♦
