While battling brain cancer, noted community leader Cheryl Chow came out of the closet and announced that she’s a lesbian. The mainstream media covered the issue extensively last week.
Several members of the Asian community knew of her failing health. We also knew four years ago that she is gay.
Perhaps the Asian Weekly could’ve done a story, but we held off, believing that we should respect for Chow and her family’s privacy. We also felt that such a story in our newspaper would raise eyebrows from members of our community, but coming from the mainstream media, there was no such reaction. It seems that our community members rarely complain about the bigger guys. Not that members of the mainstream media would take such crap from them anyway.
Sorry, but I have to rant a little sometimes. (end)
