Editorial: A triumph for Indian Americans Houston district named after Gandhi
On Jan. 16, Houston became the first city in the United States to name a major commercial area after Mahatma Gandhi. The Hillcroft-Harwin area, where the new Gandhi signboards are displayed, is dominated by South Asian businesses. Houston Mayor Annise Parker told Voice of Asia, a community weekly in Houston, that the new district signified the international character of the city.

4Culture funds local heritage and cultural facilities projects
Eleven heritage facility projects were awarded $328,835 by 4Culture — the cultural services agency for King County. The program is designed to enhance the cultural life of county citizens by funding the purchase, design, construction, and remodeling of heritage facilities, and the purchase of equipment intended to be used for at least 10 years.

Oct. 16: Northwest Immigrant Rights Project receives national recognition
The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) received the 2009 Daniel Levy Award from the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild. This national award came on the heels of a separate recognition of the NWIRP by the City of Seattle and King County for the organization’s work on behalf of immigrant survivors of domestic violence. The NWIRP just celebrated 25 years of service to the immigrant community in Washington state.
