Fundraising through sweets

On Saturday, Oct. 4, Kin On held its first annual Open House and Crafts and Bake Sale. Over 200 visitors, volunteers and community vendors filled the nursing home with handmade crafts, delicious baked goods, snacks and a friendly atmosphere. Many came to Kin On for the very first time and received informative guided tours with a board member, CEO, and/or staff member.

Fashion for a cause

Luly Yang’s 2009 20/20 Couture Fashion Show held at the Fremont Studios on Friday, Oct. 10, raised $100,000 for Camp Korey in Carnation, Wash. The five Camp Korey children models wore their custom Luly Yang dress or suit created just for them by Yang as they worked the runway.

Happy anniversary

Seattle’s own Vietnamese-language newspaper Nguoi Viet Tay Bac celebrated their 24th anniversary Oct. 3 at Tea Palace Restaurant. This year they decided to award two people the first ever Nguoi Viet Tay Bac “Wholehearted Dedication” award.

On Oct. 9 the Northwest Health Foundation (NWHF) selected Dr. Louisa Silva, of Salem, Ore., as this year’s Mark O. Hatfield Research Fellowship recipient. Funded by NWHF, the fellowship focuses on autism research and awards up to $150,000 annually.
