Sept. 19: Monthly art walk series in Chinatown
The International District held its third neighborhood art walk featuring local artists, food specials, and outdoor entertainment. Local artists on display included Becky Sullivan, the winner of the Seamless in Seattle apparel design contest. The event also featured a free showing of “Bride and Prejudice” and a demonstration by wushu master Tianyuan Li. The art walk series is organized by the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation & Development Authority (SCIDpda).

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown appointed Edward Chow, Jr. to head the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The new Coal Creek Family YMCA celebrated its grand opening with free tours, health and wellness information, class demos, and cooking demonstrations. More than 1,500 people attended.
Sept. 10: Mimi Gates announces new center for Asian Art and Ideas at SAAM
Mimi Gates, former director of the Seattle Art Museum, announced that the Center for Asian Art and Ideas (CAAI) will launch at the Seattle Asian Art Museum this fall. The center will explore facets of Asian culture including art, literature, music, history, and politics.

Executive Development Institute (EDI) alumni and other job seekers attended the “Leadership Together” networking event at Bellevue’s Hotel Sierra to tackle the challenges of job searching.
Sept. 9: Uwajimaya CEO Tomoko Matsuno honors auction high bidders
The 20 highest bidders of the Tom Douglas Dinner — auctioned earlier this spring at the Wing Luke Asian Museum Auction — enjoyed a feast at the home of Uwajimaya CEO Tomoko Matsuno, accompanied by special guests Edgar Martinez and his wife Holli. Chef Tom Douglas prepared his famous crab cakes and crab foo-yung among many other dishes featured in the Uwajimaya’s “Arigato! Thank You” 80th anniversary celebrity cookbook.

The Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) had its open house at its new location on Maynard Avenue South. Aside from three other locations in Seattle, the agency recently expanded its office in the International District. Approximately 100 people attended. ReWA is a nonprofit, multi-ethnic organization that provides refugee and immigrant women and families with culturally appropriate services.
Sept. 2: South Asian Americans in Obama administration honored
The North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA) and the South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C. (SABA-DC) honored the South Asian Americans appointed to President Barack Obama’s administration at an event held in Washington, D.C. The Obama White House has tapped more South Asian Americans to serve in the administration than any other administration in history. Nearly 200 people attended.
Sept. 11: Powerful women lunch together
Chase Bank Chairman Phyllis Campbell, REI chairman Sally Jewell, Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu, and Sound Transit Director Leslie Jones had lunch with 14 female alumni of the Executive Development Institute at New Hong Kong Restaurant in the International District.
