December 6, 2013 By Northwest Asian Weekly Leave a Comment

KOCHI, Japan (AP) – Hideki Matsuyama became the first rookie to claim the Japanese tour’s money title on Sunday with a win at the Casio World Open.

Matsuyama shot a 70 in the final round at Kochi Kuroshio Country Club to finish at 12-under 276, one stroke ahead of Yuta Ikeda.

The 21-year-old university student received $390,000 for Sunday’s win, bringing his earnings this season to slightly more than $2 million.

Matsuyama turned pro in April and has won five tournaments on the Japanese tour this season. In seven PGA Tour-sanctioned events, Matsuyama has six top-25 finishes. He plans to compete on the PGA Tour in 2014. (end)
