ABOUT “Americanese”
In 2006, SIFF presented writer-director Eric Byler’s Americanese, a penetrating anti-romance adapted from UW professor Shawn Wong’s best-selling 1995 novel “American Knees.” Aurora and Raymond are an Asian American couple on the outs. They both move on to new to relationships but Raymond has trouble letting go—to the point where he visits her apartment when she’s not there. Ultimately, Americanese explores how racism can damage even the most intimate relationships.
Filled with lush, dreamlike imagery and sharply realized emotions, the film gained critical accolades, won the Audience and Jury awards at SXSW, and was bought for theatrical distribution. Then it disappeared. SIFF Cinema welcomes back this “lost” film for a special encore screening.
