The Japanese American Veterans Association’s (JAVA) 2010 memorial scholarship program will be awarding six scholarships, three more than last year with a higher award of $1,500 each.
In addition to honoring Orville Shirey, Jack Tashiro, and Col. Douglas Ishio, in whose names the scholarships were awarded last year, the scholarships given this year will honor a separate scholarship fund in Ishio’s name, a fifth scholarship from the estate of Kiyoko Tsuboi Taukin, and a sixth award in the name of Teru Kamikawa Matsui.
To be eligible, the applicant must be a graduating high school student in 2010. He or she must be lineally related to a person who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and/or the Military Intelligence Service. The applicant can also be related to a Japanese American who has or is serving in our nation’s armed services. Those related to a member of JAVA are also eligible to apply.
Applicants will be asked to write an essay of 500 words or less on “what winning a JAVA scholarship award will mean to me.” ♦
