Chinese American Historical Day now California law, Dec. 17 day of inclusion

December 3, 2009 By Northwest Asian Weekly

In commemorating the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act and the recent passage of ACR 76 in California, California State Assembly member Mike Eng, the Yee Fow Museum, and other state and national organizations held a public conference on Dec. 6 at the Chinese American Museum in California.

ACR 76 acknowledges Dec. 17 as a “Day of Inclusion” in recognition and appreciation of the contributions of immigrants to the United States and especially to the state of California.

According to ACR 76, “By repealing the ‘Chinese Exclusion’ prohibitions, the United States expressed its commitment to continue to break down cultural barriers, appreciate differences, enrich cultural diversity, and further racial, religious, and cultural tolerance.”

Dating back to the late 1900s, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 limited the Chinese community from immigrating to and becoming naturalized citizens of the United States.

Afterward, the Alien Land Law of 1913 and the Immigration Act of 1924 were enacted respectively to limit the property of the immigrants and the number of immigration of all Asians.  ♦
